10 Years of Real Support: Henry’s Story
When Henry first connected with Dynamic Ability Support, he had never experienced support before.
The focus was on building the everyday skills that make independent living possible. Weekly routines included grocery shopping, planning meals, and getting comfortable navigating the community.
With support alongside him, Henry began developing confidence in these environments, learning how to organise errands, make decisions, and build structure into his daily life.
He became more comfortable in social settings, moving from someone who kept to himself into someone who engages openly with others. Through group activities and shared experiences, he built connections with both peers and support workers, becoming a familiar and valued presence within the DAS community. He also began managing more complex tasks on his own, including organising important paperwork and navigating services independently.
Short Term Respite opened a new chapter in Henry's journey.
In these shared environments, Henry stepped into greater responsibility. He took the lead in planning meals, managing groceries, and contributing to the household.
There is also a lot of personality in Henry's journey. From heading to his first concert to joking about birthday cake at the beach, he brings humour, warmth, and a strong sense of self to every experience. Known around the office as someone who always seems to know when there is cake, Henry has become a well-loved part of the DAS community.
Today, Henry leads a life built on independence and choice. He works as a Support Worker himself, a reflection of how far he has come. From being supported to supporting others, his journey has come full circle. As Henry puts it, "Even the wrong choice is still my own choice to make."
Henry's journey shows how consistent support, practical opportunities, and time can build real independence. As part of our 10 Stories for 10 Years milestone, his is one of the stories worth celebrating.
